Proving that royalty really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, it’s emerged that the Queen doesn’t eat pasta, potatoes or garlic.

Royal chef Darren McGrady, who has cooked for the monarch for 15 years, revealed that the Queen doesn’t eat starchy foods unless for a state dinner. Instead, her daily diet centres around the very specific dish of grilled fish or chicken with two types of vegetables. She also enjoys big bowls of salad and fresh fruit. Speaking of fruit, she has a very particular way of maximising the potential of bananas.

“With a banana, she’ll cut off the bottoms and cut the banana length-wise, and then cut the banana into tiny slices to eat with a fork,” McGrady told Recipes Plus.

The Queen is also not a fan of garlic and her chefs are told to keep it from her food.

“We can never serve anything with garlic or too much onions,” McGrady said. “We also couldn’t serve meat that was rare, as she liked her meat more well done.”

In terms of her guilty foodie pleasures, the Queen likes chocolate biscuit cake so much that it travels with her all over the country. If Her Majesty was travelling to Windsor Castle and there was uneaten chocolate cake left over, a senior chef will travel on a train with the dessert in tow.

“Now the Chocolate Biscuit Cake is the only cake that goes back again and again and again everyday until it’s all gone,” McGrady said. “She’ll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake.”

The Queen, she’s just like us.
